RE-COLLECTION
An Archive of Memories
Undergraduate Work
Project: County Archive
Site: Downpatrick, Northern Ireland
Downpatrick, a small settlement once-prominent due to it’s rich historical and geographical significance between the River Quoile and the Irish Sea, has over time become increasingly reliant on its former administrative and religious importance in transforming spiritual faith and monastic scripture within Ireland.
The diminishing importance of Downpatrick has consequently left a fragmented town centre, suffering from congested and secluded streets, hence creating an atmosphere of neglect and opposition. The unbalanced nature between public and private, light and heavy and the sense of uniformity within its historical context, particularly along English Street, portrays an idea of celebration and that all must not be revealed.
An archive is not just a place of information. It essentially becomes a place of intimacy and reflection of the past. The connection between light, space and structure, creates an ideal place to learn from those around us while offering an opportunity to custodian knowledge for future generations, as well as preserving Downpatrick’s identity as a place of cultural heritage and spiritual growth.
